October 1st is World Sake Day!
Sake is the traditional rice wine of Japan. From its origins as the “drink of the Gods” to its current status as one of the most popular drinks in the country, the history of sake is steeped in tradition, innovation, and custom. Made by fermenting rice that has been polished to remove the bran, the process of brewing sake is similar to the beer brewing process as the starches are converted to sugar, which then is fermented into alcohol. While the origins of sake are unclear, its history can be traced all the way back to the 3rd century. Accounts of the sake brewing process can be found from the 18th century and around that time many brewing companies began to spring up across the country. Landowners that grew rice crop would ship leftover rice to breweries to be used to make sake. October 1st was chosen as World Sake Day because that is the traditional starting date of sake production in Japan.
This year, come commemorate World Sake Day with DASSAI at their annual party!
Japan’s premium artisan sake brewer is coming to New York to join in the celebration by hosting a tasting event! DASSAI’s Hiroshi Sakurai, Chairman and Founder and President Kazuhiro Sakurai will be hosting the event on Thursday, September 21st from 7:00pm-9:00pm at the Haven Rooftop.
At the event, you’ll be able to enjoy various types of Sake including their ultra-luxurious DASSAI Beyond. There will also be DASSAI cocktails provided by Kenta Goto (Bar Goto) who was named on the top ten mixologists in the USA by Bon Appetit magazine. Haven Rooftop will be creating special hors d’oeuvres to pair with these cocktails and sake tastings.
